Waste Transfer Facility approved at Banksmeadow

NSW Planning have recommended and approved the development of a Waste Transfer Facility (WTF) at Banksmeadow fronting Beauchamp Road, which carries Dangerous Goods from Port Botany.

wastetThe WTF will operate 24 hours 7 days a week.  Trucks will travel from the municipalities such as Kogarah,Waverley, Woollahra, and Rockdale.  The waste will be compressed and loaded on trains for Woodlawn at Goulburn.  Effectively most of the garbage will be trucked from the west through heavily used road networks and then sent back west by train.

The nearest residents are 120 – 150 metres from the WTF in Matraville.

‘Only’ 20% of the trucks will use Denison Street.  Adding another 24 trucks between 9pm and 6am.

Submissions on the development.  Response including statement that there will ‘likely’ be ‘only’ 24 trucks on Denison between 9pm and 6am.

Conditions of Consent  requires a number of  plans eg. Traffic to be developed.  Community need to be consulted and an environmental offset that benefits residents developed.

Clyde at Auburn handles the same volume of waste.  It was bitterly fought by residents  in the Land and Environment Court.   They won in November 2003.   And then in December the Government introduced special legislation to allow the development to proceed.
